- The sport of pigeon racing is hundreds of years old. It became organized in the late 19th century, and progressed until the "Carrier Pigeon" was developed after the turn of the century. After World War I, a number of strains of modern racing pigeons were developed, primarily in Belgium and Holland, but also in the US and other areas.
